Research summary
Exploration of methods to prevent muscle atrophy by applying skeletal muscle response to cold stimuli Preventing muscle atrophy due to aging, disease, and injury is a social issue. In this study, we focused on temperature as a solution to this problem. It has been reported in vitro that cooling skeletal muscle down to 10°C or lower induces an increase in intracellular calcium ion concentration accompanied by contraction. Recently, it has been shown that the increase in intracellular calcium ion concentration promotes protein synthesis and contributes to muscle hypertrophy. The applicant has succeeded in observing this cooling phenomenon in an in vivo environment. In this project, we will establish conditions under which this cooling phenomenon can be induced by transcutaneous cold stimulation, develop a protocol to promote muscle protein synthesis, and clarify the effects of the cold stimulation on the prevention of muscle atrophy and the promotion of muscle hypertrophy.
