Research summary
Citizenship Education and Foreign Language Teaching My research looks at ways in which foreign language teachers (particularly English teachers) may contribute to aspects of education for citizenship, for example in terms of helping to nurture intercultural competence, developing students' abilities to engage in dialogue, and engaging them with citizenship-related content. My research in this area has focused especially on Japanese high schools, and the role Japanese teachers of English can play in education for citizenship.

Teaching achievements

●Practical Example of Education Technique

1.	2008/11	Organized scheme whereby doctoral students at Lancaster & Warwick universities in the UK act as mentors to graduate students at Ritsumeikan, communicating via email and Skype.
2.	2007/04 ～ 2007/07	Students in the 'Issues of Democracy' class organized a 'Deliberative Poll' for 1st years, providing instructional materials, and holding panel discussions and debates regarding constitutional reform.
3.	2006/04 ～ 2008/07	Students in academic writing classes used ‘anonymous peer editing’ to assist one another in revising their essays. A survey showed that students preferred anonymous peer feedback to other formats.
