Research summary
Investigation of molecular remodelling of the cardiac conduction system linking to arrhythmogenesis. Application for novel cardiac regenerative medicine. Cardiac arrhythmia is defined as excessively increased or decreased heart rate and rhythm disturbance, and is caused by ageing and various structural cardiac disease. It has been thought that arrhythmias come out when there is moleculer remodelling in the cardiac conduction system, but underlying mechanisms have yet been addressed. We have been focusing on the cardiac conduction system, "pacemaker tissue" to study molecular basis of various arrhythmias at the multiple levels from gene to individuals using animal models of the arrhythmia. These analyses would reveal what sort of factors give rise to arrhythmias through certain mechanisms in some specific places of the conduction system. In the case of decreased or increased function of a protein, adding or subtracting the protein would be therapeutic. In this sort of causal factors, we are trying to find out proteins associated with tissue regeneration and development, thereby we will ultimately work on whether the proteins are applicable for novel cardiac regenerative medicine.
