Research summary
Elucidation of the mechanism for the outbreak of neurodegenerative disease and the development of drastic remedy strategy Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, etc., are well known as refractory neurodegenerative diseases. We are conducting our studies to develop a drastic remedy and a new treatment drug for these neurodegenerative diseases. The brain contains nerve cells that adjust bodily functions, glia cells (microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and NG2 glia cells) to support them, and cerebral blood vessels to supply nutrition. The three coordinate with each other to conduct human brain activities. However, aging and hereditary cause the homeostasis of the brain to break down and when aggregate of disease-specific denatured proteins (Lewy body, senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, etc.) are formed, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease develop. With the arrival of ultra aging society with fewer children today, development of drugs to treat neurodegenerative diseases whose onset increase with aging is a task to be addressed immediately. Although many pharmaceutical companies have entered this field, there has not been any discovery of a specific medicine where drastic remedy can be expected. We are conducting studies for the analysis of its onset mechanism for the development of a new treatment drug, and the search for drug discovery targets using animal (rat, mouse) and human derived cultured cells. Currently, experiments are being made under research themes of “Alzheimer’s disease and microglia” and “Parkinson’s disease and DJ-1 protein”. In addition, from nerve regeneration studies of planarian brain having a very high regeneration capacity, we are targeting at elucidation of three-dimensional autonomous regeneration mechanism of cranial nerve network. We dream of linking this to development of a drastic remedy for neurodegenerative diseases.
