Research summary
1. Eurasian trade from the 18th to the 19th century centering on the Imperial Russia 2. Asian trade in Western countries and the Russian-American Company, and the international situation of the North Pacific surrounding Japan 1. While the Imperial Russia, established by Peter's reforms, expanded its territory to the coast of the Baltic Sea, the coast of the Black Sea and Siberia through the repeated wars, its advance to Siberia and the Northwest Asia is not a political result, but rather, it was caused by voluntary activities of private merchants and hunters. The initial reason why Russians dominated this region that had a sparse population was to acquire fur resources. The establishment of the Russian-American Company and the incorporation of Alaska into Russian territory in the later eras were greatly attributed to the efforts of private fur companies. However, after the establishment of the Kyakhta Trade that is the free trade between Russia and Chinese Qing, the principal item was changed from fur to tea. As the principal trade item was changed from furs that were the Russian export items to tea that was the export item of the Chinese Qing, it greatly affected the trade structure on the Russian merchants' side and the power relationships between European-Russian merchants and Siberian merchants. Furthermore, the prosperity of tea trade promoted to develop the cotton fabric that became a new Russian export item and many of the European-Russian merchants converted into factory owners. I am mainly engaged in the research on the family lines, society, information and culture of the merchants who supporte the trades through the changes in the goods distribution in the Eurasian trade (particularly Russia and the Qing dynasty of China). 2. The Western countries actively conducted mercantile establishment (factory) trade and the countries including the U.K., Sweden, Denmark and the U.S. conducted Asian trade, in which principal trade item was tea in the Canton port since the 18th century. On the other hand, Russia participated in the Asia trade through the Russian-American Company based in Russian America, but Cantonese trade was refused on account of the existence of the Kyakhta trade by the Qing dynasty. As a result, Russia attempted to participate in the Cantonese trade by consigning goods to British and American ships. Those movements were developed in parallel with the territorial division competition among Russia, the U.K. and the U.S. in the coast of Northern America and each country disputed over not only the diplomatic interests but the economic interests in the Northern Pacific. I am mainly engaged in the research on the process concerning how the Asian trade was developed in the North Pacific during the period from the establishment of the Russian-American Company to its dissolution and how those were connected to the age of imperialism in later years. Furthermore, I am planning to analyze the international situation around the North Pacific during the period when Japan came to open the country from the modern times to the end of the Edo period from the viewpoint of world trade.
