Research summary
Mechanistic Investigation of Inorganic Catalysis Reactions and Development of Advanced Time-Resolved XAFS Instrument =Research theme(1)= If we can know when the atomic arragement is changed and when the electron is moved, it becomes possible to determine the reaction mechanisms in the atomic scale (ie, we can write down the chemical equation for the reaction: it is surprisingly rare that the chemical equation can be written strictly for many chemical reactions around us). The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) method is the most powerful technique to determine the local structure and the electronic state, and we have been developing the instruments to measure XAFS spectra with the time resolution of the oreder of nano seconds. The development of the time-resolved XAFS instrument is sychronized with the progress of the synchrotron light source. =Research theme(2)= Many metal catalysts play important roles for (a) effective systhetic creation of materials which support our present society, (b) safety removal of toxic gases at industrial plants and from automobiles, (c) effective transformation from light and/or matters to energy, and so on. The mechanistic clarification in the atomic scale is very important to achieve more effective efficiency and selectivity for new catalytic materials. The systematic researches are now continuously performming to clarify the reaction mechanisms for metal catalysts using the most powerful technique, the time-resolved XAFS methhod.
