Today, the development of information technology is accelerating the globalization and complexity of society, which is accompanied by an increasing diversification of the values people hold. At the same time, the diversification of values is causing unexpected conflicts between people with different values. In recent years, the internet society has seen an endless number of flame wars in which posts made on social networking services and other media are subject to intense criticism from people with different values. In addition, a problem known as the "filter bubble" has also become apparent, in which people are biased towards the information of their interest and the community to which they belong, and become isolated within a cultural and ideological membrane (bubble) that is homogeneous to their own. To prevent such problems, it is necessary to be aware of diverse and changing values and to see things from a broader perspective. I am researching a system that expresses the values that people hold towards things and events through an informatics approach and presents values that they had not assumed in their minds, thereby giving them new insights. We are researching and developing a discussion support system that can facilitate discussions that take into account various possibilities and give new insights. While researching and developing the system, we are also exploring how people form their values about things and events, and the mechanisms and methods of expression of these values, while also considering how to express and categorize them on the system.
Research summary
Discussion Support System for Giving Awareness of Diverse Values
Society is becoming more globalized and complex with the development of information technology, and people's values are becoming more diverse. As a result, it has become necessary for society to be aware of diverse and changing values, and to have a broad perspective on all issues.
A wide variety of information is now being exchanged on the Internet, and anyone can easily refer to and post such information. However, this has led to the frequent occurrence of “flaming” on social networking services (SNS), such as Twitter, where people post their thoughts and feelings based on certain values only to find that they are criticized and pilloried by many viewers. In addition, with the development of the Web and social networking services, Internet users are exposed only to information that matches their interests and the communities to which they belong or have close relationships, which isolates them from information that differs from their point of view and makes them isolated in a homogeneous cultural and ideological bubble. This problem, known as the “filter bubble”, continues to become stronger.
These problems suggest that we may lose the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of information and that we may not be able to perceive things from a broad perspective. To prevent such a situation, it is necessary to recognize ideas that differ from our own ideas. To achieve this goal, we believe that technologies and mechanisms are necessary to gain awareness of diverse viewpoints in various situations. In addition, we think that awareness of new perspectives helps to support the generation of new ideas and encourage new ways of perceiving others.
Our research group (AIR: Acceptable Intelligence with Responsibility) has been discussing processes and approaches to make people aware of various viewpoints and has been trying to implement and verify a prototype system that incorporates such mechanisms.
To advance this research, we design and implement a system that promotes ideas by presenting new perspectives in the discussions. Specifically, we assume a frequent situation in workshops where participants are divided into several groups and discuss the same topic in parallel. By making it possible to refer to information from parallel discussions that cannot normally be accessed easily, we aim to bring the perspectives of many other participants into each group's discussion, thereby stimulating and improving the overall quality of the discussion.

Rapid development of information technology and awareness support
In recent years, the technology in the field of artificial intelligence, as typified by deep learning, has developed remarkably, producing results that improve and enhance processing accuracy in a wide range of fields, including speech and image processing and natural language processing. In the discussion support system I am researching and developing, automatic speech recognition is used to extract the content of human speech, and machine learning is used to classify textual information using language models. These are important elemental technologies in the construction of mechanisms to process discussion information in real-time and to support awareness for users. On the other hand, it is essential to respect the diverse values and perspectives within the people. While machine learning models learned with a lot of data are good at outputting comprehensive solutions for the target society (system) as a whole, they have a problem in terms of feature extraction that takes minority opinions into account and the reproduction and explainability of persistent and complex social phenomena generated in the interaction of people and things. To address these problems, it is considered necessary to have a system that handles multiple models comprising a wide variety of domains and integrates the results of feature information obtained from these models, instead of using one huge model to represent object things. It is very important in today's society for consensus building to discuss with various possibilities, rather than drawing a single comprehensive conclusion. This approach is also significant in terms of bottom-up discussion support.
