Research summary
Male-directed Sexual Violence in conflict;The language of invisibilization Sexual Harassment in Educational Contexts in Japan Roger Casement as a discursive event in the Irish Imaginary In the past, I have focused on masculinism as an oppressive force for women and sexual minority individuals in educational contexts. In the future, I would like to make connections between masculinism and violence, including sexual harassment and sexual violence in areas of conflict. In 2019, I shall work with two ex-colleagues from another university in Japan to apply for a "Kaken-Hi" grant from the Japanese government. The main objective of the research will be to explore sexual harassment in educational contexts in Japan, with a particular focus on the causes for under-reporting of offenses. My final research interest concerns a figure from Irish history, Sir Roger Casement, a complex individual who merits trans-disciplinary research: international studies, history, queer studies, Irish studies, and literary exploration.

Message
1.	Work by the "Refugee Law Project" in Uganda demonstrates the critical need to deepen our understanding of the scope of sexual violence in conflict zones such as east Congo. On-line resources from the Project show families and communities that have been destroyed because people, both female and male, have been subject to sexual crime atrocities. While female victims have some hope of assistance, almost none is available for male victims. There is a need for more scholars to raise awareness of these issues. I would like to contribute to this discussion which is emerging in the International Relations scholarly community. Regarding female masculinities in Northern Ireland, it is interesting to note the words of one IR scholar, Sandra McEvoy. She has interviewed female members of Loyalist paramilitary organizations in Northern Ireland and represented their experiences. If I had financial assistance, I would try to spend time in Northern Ireland and interview female members of Nationalist paramilitary organizations. Interviews could be analyzed in terms of gender narrative and also in terms of impact on inter-state relations between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. I would also like to interview men who are stakeholders in the political processes in Northern Ireland to explore narratives of self as male protector and to see if it is possible to predict situations in which gender patterns of hegemonic masculinity move to a more extreme level as “hypermasculinity”
