Research summary
Synthesis and Chemical Modification of Naturally Occurring Bioactive Compounds Since biologically active compounds from medicinal plants are often isolated as glycosides, such as digitoxin and glycyrrhizin. On the other hand, glycolipids and glycoproteins expressed on animal cell surface play important roles in biological events, such as, immune responces, fertilization, inflammation, infection of viral and bacteria, and metastasis of tumor cells. In addition, some antibiotics are also isolated as glycosides. On the basis of these facts, we are now focusing on development of novel synthetic methods of oligosaccharides to provide promising candidates of glycomedicines Moreover, we are planning to synthesize other type of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids and terpenoids as well as glycosides.

Message
1.	Creating Novel Medicines by the Combination of Natural Product Chemistry and Modern Synthetic Chemistry Many medicines have been developed to remedy diseases and to maintain human health and QOL (quality of life) on the basis of naturally occurring products. We are now much interest in medicinal plants which have been used in very chilly areas and high-glands. We are going to develop novel medicines by introducing modern science and technology into the traditional medicines. Namely, we will challenge to fuse modern technology in chemistry into field work for searching unknown traditional medicines, targeting new medicines.
